What separates the top picks on this page?

Four services, four different models. Wyzant scores 8.2 and runs on a marketplace: 65,000 tutors in 300 subjects, pay by the hour, no subscription. Tutor.com scores 8.0 and connects you to a vetted tutor in minutes at any hour. Outschool also scores 8.0 but sells small live classes from $10–20 a session. Varsity Tutors scores 7.6 and is the managed option, with matching, live classes and practice tests wrapped into a membership.

Price is the clearest split. Outschool starts at $18, Tutor.com at $40, Wyzant at $55, Varsity Tutors at $75. Wyzant tutors mostly land between $35–75 an hour. Varsity Tutors is the most expensive per hour here, and pricing is only revealed on a sales call.

What should you check before buying?

Vetting matters most, and it is not uniform. Tutor.com and Outschool background-check every tutor. Varsity Tutors vets rigorously. On Wyzant, background checks are optional, so read the badge on each profile before booking.

Then look at how the service handles fit and billing:

  • Wyzant: pay per lesson after it happens, and the first hour is refunded if it does not fit. Profiles show hours taught and ratings.
  • Tutor.com: you get a different tutor each time, so there is no ongoing relationship, and hourly subscriptions expire monthly.
  • Outschool: group classes mean less individual attention, and quality depends on the teacher — reviews help.
  • Varsity Tutors: memberships auto-renew, so check the terms before you commit.

Scoring weights tutor quality and vetting at 30, matching and scheduling at 20, value at 20, lesson platform at 15, and price transparency and policies at 15. If you care about a consistent tutor, weight matching and scheduling heavily. If you care about cost, weight value and transparency.

Questions about best online math tutoring

How much does online tutoring cost?
From about $10 an hour for a language tutor on Preply or italki to $70–100 an hour for a vetted academic tutor on Wyzant or Varsity Tutors. Kids' English platforms like Novakid charge $10–20 per 25-minute lesson. Subscriptions (Cambly, Varsity Tutors memberships) cost less per hour only if you use them.
Are online tutors background-checked?
It depends. Novakid, Outschool, Varsity Tutors and Tutor.com run background checks on everyone who teaches; Wyzant checks identity and offers optional background checks shown on profiles; Preply and Cambly verify identity and rely on reviews. For a child, choose a platform that checks everyone and stay in the room.
Marketplace or managed service?
Marketplaces (Preply, Wyzant) let you pick the tutor and pay per lesson — cheapest and most flexible, but quality varies and you do the choosing. Managed services (Varsity Tutors, Tutor.com, Novakid) vet, match and structure the lessons for more money and less choice. Our best lessons came from both kinds; our worst came from marketplaces where we picked badly.
How do you test tutoring platforms?
Three learners each take five paid lessons on every platform. We record how tutors are vetted, how long it takes to book a first lesson, the quality of the five tutors we got, how the built-in classroom works, what the platform charged versus what it advertised, and how rescheduling and refunds went when we tested them.
